This week's Rave: Presents for Mother's DayThis is the first time that all my children have acknowledged Mother's Day. They're no longer children at this point - they're all adults now with the youngest in college - but they're still my children. Anyone who has ever raised children knows that it can be a pretty thankless task. Not to say it's not rewarding but still it's a lot of work. My oldest has been acknowledging Mother's Day for years; I think my middle one may have called in the past; I'm pretty sure my youngest one never even knew when Mother's Day was. My oldest one always calls & sends a card, which I sincerely appreciate. The shockers were my other two. This year my daughter, the middle one, sent me flowers & accompanying the flowers was THE NOTE. This is what every mother waits for and it can be in the form of a conversation or a note - the one where the kid says that now that they are grown up, they "get it" & they appreciate you. (Often this insight does not come until after the child becomes a parent which my daughter is not yet). The nice thing about a note is that you can re-read it. This year, also, my youngest one brought me something. I was stunned! This is the same kid who doesn't even return my phone calls or answer my email? Oh, well, who knows what got into him? Aside from being an insightful gift (an Indian cookbook), it shows that he actually thought of me & did something for me. This is a milestone in any child's life, but especially coming from a 20-year-old who still argues about emptying his wastebasket. I know I've been lucky with them, and I'm grateful. The real gift is knowing that they actually thought of me. Interested in past "raves of the week" that you might have missed? |
