This week's Random Rant: Huge LOUD TVs are everywhere!

Why is it that every place I go has big screen TVs blaring?

I walk into a frozen yogurt store last night and it's a little tiny place and there are not one but TWO big flat screen TVs on the walls & both of those suckers are BLARING! There's no place to go avoid the noise. Sat down with friends to try to have a conversation & enjoy our yogurt & it was impossible!

Last week at the dentist's office - same thing. It's not blaring like at the yogurt store but it's loud enough that you can't read or think or ignore it. There were three people in the waiting room and the other two were also very obviously trying to read so I asked the receptionist if she could turn the TV down or off, and she got visibly annoyed with me. She did eventually (reluctantly) turn it down - not off, of course - but what is it about TVs that they have to be on ALL THE TIME and really LOUD? Is this part of branding - that if we display a big flat-screen TV and it's loud that we're cool or more attractive or desirable - and we'll go back to the dentist or the yogurt store or wherever? Maybe that used to be the case when only rich people had them? but now I think they're so ubiqutous that they're everywhere & not a status symbol any more.

Don't get me wrong. I love watching movies on big flat-screen TVs; I have cable TV with a DVR and I love watching my shows and I could waste a whole lot of time watching TV if I let myself. But being forced to listen to a random stupid show that someone else picked out? Not so much. That's more like torture.

Am I the only person who hates this? Sheesh!
