This week's Food Rant: People Don't Eat Real Food! or maybe An Ode to My Mother

I was talking about and eating real food decades ago - way before anyone ever heard of Michael Pollan. I'm glad he's famous & people are listening to him!

First of all, I was raised this way. My mother was a spectacular cook. Back then, if the mom didn't cook, you were SOL because in the olden days, fast food didn't really exist and NO ONE went to real restaurants every night. Restaurants were someplace you went on special occasions. My mother talked about fiber when it was called "roughage" - in the 50's! She talked about calories when the calorie count wasn't printed on every label and you couldn't just look it up on the internet. She bought Deans' Vim - 2% milk! Most people just routinely drank whole milk. We didn't have junk food around the house. Back then, no one knew what a tortilla chip was but potato chips have always been around.

So - you ask - what is your point? Well, I have several:
1. So many people who complain about the cost of food are the ones who are buying processed expensive non-food, anyway. What is so difficult about forming a hamburger patty that you have to buy them already shaped? If you don't like to handle raw meat, then buy a package of food-handler gloves.
2. People on special diets who complain about not being able to find food? If they just made it from scratch, they could put in whatever they wanted. Can't eat soybean oil & there's no salad dressing? Make your own! Can't eat gluten & there's no soup without wheat? Make your own! These things are easy & take a fraction of the time it takes to slog through the store & read every label. . .

Maybe next week my "recipe of the week" will be how to make a basic salad dressing. It probably hasn't even occurred to most people.
